Flights
However, for travelers wanting to lessen their impact on the planet this can be a tough choice as air travel is one of the most polluting forms of transport. Even a short-haul flight produces as much carbon dioxide as the average motorist releases in a year.

Considering your environment
It's worth considering this when planning your next trip and maybe you'll decide to explore somewhere closer to home. After all, if you live in Colorado then you don't really need to fly to France to go skiing. Fly only when you have to – do you really need to take that short-haul flight or could you travel by train instead? Is two long-haul holidays a year a bit excessive or should you limit yourself to one really great one?
That said, we're not saying don't fly. A lot of the hotels we feature are in hard-to-reach places and these bring huge employment opportunities to local communities. Without tourism they simply wouldn't survive.
The Ol Malo Eco-Lodge in Kenya is one such example. Because of tourism, 5,000 acres of previously over-grazed farm land has been transformed into an immaculate conservation site. The lodge provides the infrastructure and backup for a range of community work and the Ol Malo Trust runs regular surgical camps bringing doctors to the area to treat adults with preventable eye disease. None of this would be possible if it weren't for the money that tourism brings.
