Frommer's: "The best place to stay in Natal is also one of the nicest spots to rest your head in all Brazil. The Manary is done up like a Spanish hacienda, with old dark beams, red-tile roofs, and large cool flagstones on the floor. The location is also premium, with a large deck and two pools (one regular, one for children) facing out over the sea. In the rooms, the furnishings are tasteful and unique, the beds king-size, the mattresses, linen, and furniture all top-notch. All rooms come with a balcony and ocean view. For the 15 standard rooms, the view is a bit oblique, but still lovely. The nine deluxe rooms have a straight-on view. The luxury suite not only has a broad veranda facing out over the water, but it also has a Jacuzzi whirlpool. Breakfast here is memorable -- a well-stocked array of fresh regional fruits and lots of regional delicacies, plus fresh-made tapioca pancakes and eggs however you like 'em. The Manary is a member of the Roteiros de Charme, a network of top-end pousadas and small hotels."

good for you

This welcoming hotel is one of the best places to dine in Natal, and one of the loveliest places to stay in North Brazil. The staff members are friendly, the restaurant is the best in the Ponta Negra neighbourhood and most of the rooms have sweeping views of the beach. Built in Hacienda style, fragrant flowers and exotic art objects decorate the indoors, while the poolside bar, which serves ice cold local beers and excellent fruity cocktails, is lit by candles at night, making for a very romantic atmosphere.

You'll breakfast on a sumptuous array of tropical fruits, along with eggs and pancakes, lounge happily in your hammock, and rest in a big bed with perfect linen in an elegantly decorated and extremely comfortable room.

Manary Praia makes an excellent base from which to explore the area and the many activities on offer - the beaches, beautiful lakes with lots of water sports to enjoy, the impressive sand dunes and the lush forest beyond. Ponta Negra itself has great bars with superb live music, all an easy walk from the hotel.

Very well located to all the restaurants and entertainment on the promenade.

The hotel has adopted an Environmental Code of Conduct, adopted by all the members of the "Roterios de Charme" group, of which Manary Praia is one. The code has been recognized by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and sets out regulations and principles that hotels should follow in order to be more environmentally sustainable.

Manary also supports a local surf school that works with underprivileged children, and works with a program to protect the endangered manatee - a large sea mammal.

Highs

  • The hotel itself is just a lovely place to be. In a great location, offering easy access to beautiful scenery, pretty beaches and active pursuits, it's also just great to lie by the pool and dine in the wonderful Manary restaurant.

Food

The Manary Restaurant, with a beautiful view of the sea, provides delicious dishes that draw on international and Brazilian cuisine. Considered one of Natal's finest, it's especially well known for its seafood dishes, and its "feijoada" - a traditional and very hearty Brazilian stew - is the best in town. The desserts are quite heavenly.

The restaurant makes every effort to use ingredients produced locally and sustainably.

During the day, you can enjoy cocktails or fresh juices, as well as snacks, at the casual poolside bar.

In the evening, the restaurant is lit by flaming torches and candles, creating a romantic atmosphere, and the portico is a neo-colonial work of art, inspired by the churches and mansions of Olinda and Ouro Preto and constructed by master wood and stone carvers.

  • Two swimming pools (one especially for children)
  • internet access and direct dial phones in all guest rooms

Local Info & Activities

Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Northeast, Ponta Negra boasts welcome blue waters, stretches of golden sand, and the beautiful dunes of Morro do Careca - the highest sand dune in the Northeast - all surrounded by a dense pristine forest. The best restaurants, bars and nightspots in Natal are in the Ponta Negra neighborhood, and there are also plenty of shops to buy local handicrafts, clothing, music and other goods.

Known as the "city of the sun", Natal's annual average temperature of 26¼C ( 78¼F ) together with the constant breeze, ensure continual sunny days.

Its warm white-sand beaches are very swimmable, while the golden sand dunes that surround Natal are great for exploring in a dune buggy or just for catching a stunning view of the sunset.

The city is very cosmopolitan, having been home to the indigenous Brazilians, along with Portuguese, French, Dutch, and the descendents of African slaves. The people are warm and welcoming, and boast a rich and varied culinary culture, including seafood, country style beef, manioc flour, tapioca, brown sugar and coconut sweets, manioc flour, tapioca, and plenty of exotic fruits.

The traditional couples dance, called forro, the lively scene in the bars and restaurants of Alto de Ponta Negra will keep you entertained in the evenings.

Internationally renowned for its beautiful beaches and sand dunes, the Brazilian Northeast has its own identity, drawing on a mix of cultures and races and a rich history. The interior of the Northeast boasts an impressive amount of prehistoric rock art, while parts of the lush and untouched Caatinga forest are still being newly discovered.

Sustainability

The Manary Praia hotel is owned by Eduardo Bagnoli, a geologist and a leading environmentalist in Northern Brazil. The building was designed to blend in with the beachside environment rather than dominating it, and building materials and methods were selected carefully and with consideration to environmental conservation.

Manary Praia cooperates with the Manatee Project (Projeto Peixe-Boi Marinho), which aims to protect one of the most endangered marine mammal species, whose natural habitat is the Northeastern coast. The manatee is a gentle sea mammal that feeds on marine plants and can grow to 1200 pounds.

Due to hunting, accidental death in fishing nets, stranding of young animals and habitat loss, the manatee is considered the most endangered species of marine mammals in Brazil. Manary cooperates with the Manatee Project.

Manary Praia also supports the "Morro do Careca" Surfing School which aims to help underprivileged children from Vila de Ponta Negra develop self-esteem and a healthy lifestyle through sport.

The hotel has adopted an Environmental Code of Conduct, adopted by all the members of the "Roterios de Charme" group, of which Manary Praia is one. The code has been recognized by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme).
