Good For You

New to the eco-hotel scene is this modern option owned by a Spanish couple in the heart of Jerez. Bold contemporary colours, slick furnishings and clean lines make this a boutique residence that is both stylish and eco-friendly.

The fourteen-room hotel sits in a neighbourhood that’s almost as colourful as the hotel itself, the traditional gypsy quarter. This area is home to a host of leading Flamenco artists as well as a lively café, restaurant and bar scene. Jerez hosts a number of lively festivals throughout the year and it’s a lovely place to base yourself for exploring the neighbouring white-washed villages and the Costa de la Cruz beaches.

Back at the hotel and there’s more than enough to keep visitors happy. A magnificent roof-terrace offers fantastic views of the city while the pretty walled garden is a great place to escape to when the fiestas really get going. And did we mention that the resident chef is one of the best in town?

Good For Spain

Hotel Chancilleria has been built according to strict environmental principles. The windows are located to take advantage of the natural cooling and heating capacity inherent in the building and its relation to the movement of the sun throughout the year. Non-contaminating lime mortar rendering has been used which allows the building to ‘breath’. Similarly, silicate paints have been employed along with natural latex roof waterproofing. The hotel also has grey-water recycling in place and solar energy currently covers 60 per cent of the hotel’s hot water requirements.

The hotel sources locally produced products for the restaurant when possible, using small producers who practice traditional agricultural methods. The hotel’s olive oil based bathroom products are also locally produced.

Highs

The location: This is the perfect place for a city break and there’s the added bonus of having Seville and Cadiz just around the corner.

The hotel: Hotel Chancilleria has only just opened and everything is brand, spanking new.

The restaurant: The head chef is one of the best in town and his menu is both creative and delicious.

Lows

The crowds: Jerez gets very crowded whenever there is a festival or fiesta in town, make sure you book well in advance if travelling at these times.

There are fourteen light, spacious and fully equipped bedrooms consisting of eight doubles, four twin and two single rooms. Of the eight doubles, two are “superior” and there are also two “superior” twin rooms. Superior rooms can accommodate and extra bed if needed.

Beds are comfortable with cotton linen, the bathrooms are spacious, and each room also comes with an LCD T.V and media centre, free Internet broadband connection, mini-bar, and hair-dryer.

All but two rooms are wheel-chair friendly, and the four twin rooms also have adapted bathrooms, with roll-in showers, support bars, and open easy-access wardrobes.

Food

Enjoy a delicious meal in the small hotel restaurant or walled garden, or sit at the bar for a tapa and discover the rich diversity of Andalusian cuisine.

Juande is the young chef in charge of the hotel restaurant. He was runner-up in both the Andalusia Promising Young Chef and National Promising Young Chef awards. Born in Jerez, he trained at two of the leading schools in Andalusia and then honed his skills working in some of the top restaurants in Andalusia. He is inspired by traditional cuisine, creating surprising new forms and combinations. He only uses top quality, mostly local, seasonal produce.

The menu reflects both the varied gastronomy that characterises the province of Cádiz, ranging from traditional mountain village fare to the coastal fish and seafood dishes. Also included are some interesting vegetarian dishes.

The unique wines of the Jerez triangle, such as finos, manzanilla, amontillados, palo cortados or Pedro Ximenez, feature strongly on the wine list, together with an interesting selection of wines from other Spanish regions.

Local Info & Activities

Hotel Chancilleria can organise a number of activities for guests travelling solo or as part of a group. There are a number of well-designed golf courses in the area suitable for players of all levels. In addition, the hotel can assist with organising the following.

Jerez

The generous and hospitable people are keen to share the culture and traditions that they are so proud of: their Flamenco and the March Flamenco Festival, their wines, their horse traditions, their cuisine, their fiestas, Easter Processions, their Spring Fair, a lively shopping area, their relaxed pace of life. And every year they host a Gran Prix Motorbike Championship. The scale of the town means that it is easy to walk around.

Wine

Jerez is a wine-producing region and depending on the time of year of your stay, the hotel can organise a wine-tasting course, a visit to one of the smaller family bodegas to see what the process involves and, where possible, a visit to a vineyard. They can also arrange a special evening meal featuring wine in cooking. The May Spring Fair (Feria de Caballo) is a week of dancing drinking and eating and is the highlight of the Jerez calender. This is the ideal opportunity to enjoy local wines whilst enjoying Flamenco dancing and good food.

Horses

Jerez is the heart of the Andalusian equestrian world, featuring the breath-taking beauty of the Andalusian horse. Depending on the date and day of the week, Hotel Chancilleria can organise tickets to see either the horse show and installations offered by either, or both, the famous Real Escuela Andaluza de Arte Ecuestre, and the very interesting but less well-known breeding centre, La Yeguada de la Cartuja. The hotel also works with some very good riding centres in the area that offer courses for all levels or rides across the local countryside.

The May Horse Fair (Feria de Caballo), a week of dancing, drinking and eating, features many horse events and is the ideal opportunity to enjoy watching the locals, with their horses and carriages dressed in all their finery. Bookings need to be made well in advance.

The Surrounding Areas

Jerez is the perfect place from which to explore the whitewashed villages of Arcos de la Frontera, Medina Sidonia, Ubrique and Grazalema as well as the hills and nature reserves, that include the Alcornocales cork-oak forest. Throughout the year there are many interesting traditional “fiestas” and events to see.

The nearby towns of Sanlucar de Barrameda, on the edge of the Coto de Doñana Wild Life Park, and El Puerto de Santa Maria are both interesting and form part of the Jerez wine triangle. They have good restaurants and bars.

Costa de la Luz beaches

The beaches along this strip of coast are kilometres of unspoilt, fine white sand, bathed by the Atlantic winds and the unique light that characterises the area. The nearest are Rota, Chipiona, Puerto, then further along towards Algeciras you reach Conil, Palmar, Bolonia with its amazing Roman ruins, and then Tarifa, home to kite and board surfing.

Three-in-one city break

Sevilla, Cádiz andJerez; three handsome but different cities. The ancient town of Cádiz, with its Habana airs, has always looked out across the sea. The ancient narrow, shady streets make it a fascinating city that lives for its carnival in February.

Sevilla, by contrast, is an elegant, aristocratic city. The capital of Andalucia it has a thriving business and shopping centre, that boasts many beautiful building. Wandering through the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz neighbourhood you can sense the Moorish presence. It is easy to get to both Cádiz and Sevilla from Jerez, either by car of public transport.

Sustainability

The design team, led by architect Pablo Rico, promotes sustainable architectural practice and incorporated the following elements into designing and building Hotel Chancilleria:

  • Bioclimatic design: the windows are located to take advantage of the natural cooling and heating capacity inherent in the building and its relation to the movement of the sun throughout the year. This reduces the hotel’s use of air-conditioning and creates a more natural environment.
  • The new section of the hotel is built with “Termoarcilla” (lightweight-clay) bricks, for their greater insulating capacity, again contributing towards a more natural environment.
  • Non-contaminating lime mortar rendering allows the building to breathe and is 100% mineral.
  • Silicate paints; also allow the building to breathe and are non-allergic.
  • Natural latex roof waterproofing, instead of oil-based products.
  • The wooden windows are painted with eco-friendly paint and fitted with 5/8/5 double-glazing.
  • Solar energy covers 60% of the hotel’s hot-water requirements.
  • Grey-waters recycling; rain, sink and bath waters are collected, treated and re-used in WC, before joining the main sewage system.
  • Water-saving taps.
  • Gas not electric kitchen equipment.
  • In addition the hotel sources locally produced products for the restaurant when possible, using small producers who practice traditional agricultural methods. This reduces ‘food miles’ and also protects both local knowledge and livelihoods. The hotel’s olive oil based bathroom products are locally produced, cutting transport and promoting the local economy. The hotel also encourages guests to spend time in the local area and offers a range of activities that provide the opportunity for visitors to learn about the rich, diverse local culture and history.
