The Guardian, November 2004 : "The relatively undeveloped Atlantic coastline is the hipper alternative to the Costa del Sol. Vejer is on a hill overlooking the ocean, its Moorish origins still apparent. The CasaCinco is a restored townhouse with a central "riyadh" courtyard and many nooks and crannies. The four bedrooms have white walls, open rafters and bare floors, enlivened by colourful bedclothes and painted woodwork. Semi-open-plan bath rooms. A rooftop terrace and a small reading room provide options for chilling."
Expect antique furniture, sumptuous fabrics and quirky finishings such as the feather boa that adorns one bedroom.

Good For You
Vejer de la Frontera is a magical Moorish town characterised by whitewashed buildings, sloping cobbled roads and ancient fortifications. Tucked away in one of the narrow streets is CasaCinco, a charming bed and breakfast that simply oozes style.
The house dates back to the 10th century and extensive renovations have been carried out to transform this ruin into a unique retreat filled with character by its English owners, Colette and Glen.
There are just five bedrooms here, all differing in size and shape and all individually decorated. Each comes with its own en-suite bathrooms and holistic bath time goodies hand crafted by a French designer. Expect antique furniture, sumptuous fabrics and quirky finishings such as the feather boa that adorns one bedroom.
A breezy flat roof terrace offers breathtaking views over the Andalucian countryside and across the sea to the mountains of North Africa while the cosy reading room makes a homely retreat in the cooler months.
Good For Spain
The house dates from the 10th century and great care has been taken in its restoration. Wooden ceiling beams have been retained where possible and where not, reclaimed old beams have been painstakingly hand planned and rubbed with linseed oil in keeping with the traditional building methods of the area.
All floors were removed to strengthen them but all the original tiles replaced again these were buffed with natatorial oils. The old tiled roof is wonderful example of different sized tiles reflecting the fact they were crafted on the thighs of the original builders so naturally vary in size and shape.
Windows, frames and glass where possible were restored and any new windows made in the old style using local craftsmen. All the builders were local were hired both for their understanding of traditional building methods and to provide local employment.
HighsThe setting: This is a stunning part of Spain and there is so much to do here. No matter how long you book for, once you've arrived you'll wish you had asked for an extra week off work. The bedrooms: Quirky and individual, these lovely rooms come with lashings of style without sacrificing comfort. The Number Six The Castle: This lovely house is ideal for families, proving that those with rug rats can still enjoy a fashionable holiday in a designer retreat. |
LowsThe size: Not surprisingly, CasaCinco is becoming an increasingly popular holiday choice and as such the five rooms get booked up very quickly. The access: Although there is one ground floor double accessible to wheelchair users the rest of the house, and Vejer itself, is not very wheelchair-friendly. |
Rooms

There are five comfortable, stylish double bedrooms named after one of your five senses; See, Touch, Hear, Taste and Aroma. The rooms and the ambience of the house invite guests to escape the hustle and bustle and to reawaken their five senses. All rooms are individually furnished and differ in size. There are two petite doubles, one standard double and two large doubles. They have all been designed and created in keeping with the original Riad style house layout. All have heating and fans.
However, this is not a themed hotel and the designer bedrooms are elegant. All rooms have double beds, en-suite (open plan) shower / bathrooms with bath and body products from French designer Pascal Morabito. Comfortable beds are dressed in 100% Egyptian cotton sheets. Rooms have CD players but no TVs, this hotel is all about escapism after all.
See
A large double with French windows and wrought iron balcony with seating area and pretty views plus a bigger bathroom with shower and bath. You'll also find a couple of battered leather armchairs, an antique leather trunk for a coffee table and the stone floor keeps the room refreshingly cool during the summer months. The room is located at the front of the house.
Touch
A large double with seating area and bigger bathroom complete with shower and bath. More flamboyant than some of the other bedrooms, guests staying here can expect decorations in the shape of feather boas, antique mannequins and a glittering Moroccan wedding cape. The room is located off the reading room.
Hear
A standard double painted in cheery yellow and Moroccan blue. This room comes with lots of light, colourful Indian cushions, wind chimes, a shower room and recessed star-lit alcove.
Taste
A petite double with glass partitioned bathroom with shower and bath, antique silver filigree style bed and 70's retro furnishings. This room is located off the ground floor inner courtyard.
Aroma
Located up in the eaves, this petite double is charming and bijou with white washed exposed beams and a shower room. It is located across the entrance to the roof top terrace.
CasaCinco also offers guests the opportunity to hire out Number Six The Castle, an old town historic house that sits at the very top of the town within the ancient fortifications. It's a warren of rooms on two levels emanating from a courtyard and then a walled garden. There's a small pool, barbeque and outdoor shower, as well as an orange tree, bougainvillea and vine for shade.
The house is decorated in the traditional style with whitewashed walls and exposed beams, but with all modern conveniences; two bathrooms, washing machine and dishwasher, as well as a TV, DVD and a collection of books, CD's and movies. This is very much a family home. There are three double bedrooms and a couple of smaller children's bedrooms sleeping a maximum of six adults.
Food

The CasaCinco kitchen provides a hearty, healthy breakfast using local artisan made produce. Freshly squeezed juices, cereals, fresh fruit, artisan breads and pastries, hand made cheeses and classic Spanish meats, and eggs prepared any way you would like them.
On occasion the CasaCinco dining room hosts special dinner evenings with a renowned local chef.

Local Info & Activities
The town of Vejer de la Frontera was once one of the strongholds which marked the border between Christian Spain and Moorish Al Andalus and is one of the most attractive of the famed Pueblos Blancos. This hill town is a perfectly preserved example of what many Andalucian towns were like during five centuries of Islamic occupation. Vejer's views are spectacular and there is much to keep you busy both in town and outside.
The town is just a few kilometres from the beaches at El Palmar, Trafalgar Bay or Los Canos de Meca. The town also backs onto the 'Las Breñas' Natural Park a 5,000ha forest of pine wood running down to the coast & the 'Marismas' Natural Park a smaller nature reserve through which the Barbate river runs through & home to an important collection of birdlife. Both parks have walking trails running through them.
CasaCinco can arrange food appreciation courses and tours as one of the owners is a food writer and contributes to a local magazine. She has extensive contacts with local producers and offers a rare insight into the food production and products of the area.
For something a little more active, CasaCinco can help arrange golf, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, horse ridding, walking, biking and nature tours with a well qualified guide.
Day trips from here include Seville (a couple of hours' drive) and Cadiz (30km).
INSIDER TIP/S
Although one of the bedrooms is accessible to wheelchair users, the town itself is very hilly which might make it difficult for travellers with disabilities.
There are no telephones in the hotel so if you must keep in contact with the outside world then make sure to bring a mobile phone with you.
The best time to visit is spring and early summer or late summer and early autumn.
CasaCinco is not suitable for children under 16.

In furnishing the house many reclaimed items have been used including antique beds and wardrobes which reflect the craftsmanship of the day. Items came from antique markets, flea markets, and the owner's private collection. This lends the house an eclectic and individual style.
CasaCinco does not have air conditioning instead preferring to use the natural air flow of the internal patio and traditional shutters to keep out the sun.
Rubbish is the main environmental concern here and CasaCinco actively recycles. They are currently exploring ways to process their organic waste. They use minimum packaging while still conforming to clean food practices. Bed linen is changed every three days unless otherwise requested in order to reduce unnecessary washing.
CasaCinco uses locally grown produce including artisan breads, cheese and meats. Everything is bought locally so the money remains in the community.
CasaCinco employs local people and are members of the local trade association.
