Fodor’s guidebook: Alberto and Claudia Giannotti have turned a former 16th-century country villa into an elegantly comfortable agriturismo 20 minutes south from the center of Florence. If you're looking for a country experience but crave easy access to the city, this place outside the small town of Impruneta does the trick. Many of the apartments look out over a gently terraced field of olive trees. (The estate produces top-notch olive oil, as well as some respectable wine.) The cheerful apartments are suitable for couples; some are adjoining, making them good options for families or groups. Unlike many agriturismi, there's no minimum stay during high season here.

good for you

This restored, extremely lavish 16th century farmhouse has been adapted to create a very comfortable ‘Agriturismo’ farm stay, with all the benefits of a self-catered villa, along with excellent hotel services and a small Tuscan restaurant.

Nestled in a 70-hectar landscape of rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards, the accommodations include eight apartments, two cottages and the farmhouse, all surrounded by a working farm which produces its own organic olive oil. There is a large shared swimming pool, surrounded by white sand and olive trees, and some of the accommodations enjoy their own private pools. The views from the pools and terraces are picturesque, taking in the rich fertile valley and the hills beyond.

The Villa is a short drive to the centre of Florence, with all its treasures, and is a quick walk to the lovely village of Impruneta, where you’ll find many gorgeous little restaurants and friendly trattoria and pizzeria, as well as fantastic delis to shop for Tuscan goods like cheese and wine.

good for tuscany

Chosen by The Good Travel Company for its heritage value, Villa l’Olmo was once the summer residence of the Davanzati, a very old and noble Florentine family, dating back to the 16th century. It was acquired by the current owner’s family in the middle of the 18th century, and restored and remodeled as the The Relais Villa l’Olmo in 2001. The original structure, which dates back to 1500, was restored with exceptional care and sensitivity to preserve its historical value.

The agriturismo accommodations are integrated with the farming business, which produces organic olive oil in the traditional Tuscan manner, with an ancient stone olive press.

Highs

  • This hotel offers the best of both worlds – a tranquil Tuscan farm setting with plenty of modern conveniences, just 20 minutes from central Florence.
  • The hotel is great for families with children. The sand “beach? at the large pool is a stroke of genius – kids can amuse themselves there while you lounge in a recliner with a book. Italians love children, and the nearby restaurants are all kid-friendly.

Lows

  • The restoration is great, and the small number of guests on what is a large and leafy property makes for a relatively sound environmental profile, but with extensive swimming pools, air-conditioning and all other mod-cons, the place is by no means 100% green.

Rooms

The Villa offers eight apartments, two private cottages and a farmhouse – all spread throughout the vast estate, accommodating up to 45 guests at a time.

Each apartment consists of a living room, a fully-equipped kitchen corner (with dishwasher), one or two double bedrooms, a bathroom (with hairdryer), direct telephone, satellite TV, DVD (reception has a film collection), wireless internet, electronic safe, air conditioning and independent heating. Apartment guests share the large swimming pool surrounded by sand and olive trees, overlooking the Chianti valley, as well as a barbecue garden for preparing dinner under the Tuscan sky.

The farmhouse has three double bedrooms and is perfect for large families or groups of friends, and shares the large common pool with the apartments.

The private villas offer the same comfort as the apartments but each one has, in addition, its own pool and private garden with a private barbecue area.

The accommodations are all tastefully decorated with hand-made lamps, cheery gingham and stripe fabrics, traditional wrought iron tables and other antique furniture, chairs and comfortable sofas. Some of the rooms are more rustic with exposed stone walls and ceilings. The beds have cosy down comforters, and the towels are big and fluffy. There is a daily housekeeping service.

Food

All the accommodations are self-catered, but for those who prefer a catered breakfast, it is served at the top of the hill near the apartments and cottages, under an ancient loggia. Breakfast is from 7:30 to 10:30.

The village has a supermarket to stock up on food, and lots of fabulous specialty stores selling Tuscan cheese, wine, bread and smallgoods.

On the property, just a short walk from the accommodations, there is a typical Tuscan country restaurant in a small wooded garden, open during the summer months. During the low season, the Villa offers a half-board rate including meals at this country restaurant.

Many other Tuscan restaurants, pizzerias and trattorias are close by, some at walking distance, others a short drive away. It is well worthwhile to explore the villages around the property, as each has its own character and charming restaurants, trattorias and wine bars. Upon arrival, the reception desk will present you with information about the Villa’s recommended local eateries.

Sustainability

This hotel has been chosen by the Good Travel Co for its heritage value and its careful restoration of historical buildings on the property.

Villa l’Olmo was the summer residence of the Davanzati’s, a very old and noble Florentine family, dating back to 1500. It was acquired by the current owner’s family in the middle of the 18th century. The Relais Villa l’Olmo was completely restored in 2000 with exceptional care to preserve the original structure which dates back to 1500.

The property also includes the owner’s private villa, a small restaurant and an olive press, part of the small farm which is operational to this day. Impruneta, a typical tuscan town, is a comfortable and short walk away.

With only 45 guests at a time as maximum, on a 70-hectare property with plenty of olive trees, vineyards and woods, the carbon output is relatively low, but the accommodations are not green, using conventional energy and waste disposal as well as air conditioning and all other modern conveniences.
