good for you

Located on Jimbaran Heights, Udayana Eco Lodge is perched on 30 hectares of dense tropical gardens in a conservation area for birds and butterflies. Featuring just 10 double rooms, the lodge has a stunning view Mt. Agung and Jimbaran and Benoa Bays. Safe, quiet and convenient to all of southern Bali's attractions, Udayana Eco Lodge is the perfect choice for those who want to experience the real Bali away from the tourist throngs that crowd the main beaches and towns - but at the same time have access to all those centres have to offer.

good for indonesia

'Green Globe 21' eco-certified, this eco-lodge is owned by the same outfit that runs two other Indonesian eco-lodges - Flores' Bajo Komodo Eco Lodge and the Rimba Orang-utang Eco Lodge in Borneo. The organization, which plans to open more properties, is leading the way for eco-tourism in Indonesia, with their hotels focusing on local employment, environmental sustainability and the conservation of Indonesia's varied and beautiful natural environment.

Highs

  • The peace and quiet. With its own bird and butterfly sanctuary and its beautiful gardens, the ecolodge is a world apart from hectic Kuta and Nusa Dua beaches.

Lows

  • The functional architecture and rooms are not as characteristically Balinese as some other hotels on the island.
  • While the lodge uses mostly solar power, air conditioning undermines its eco-credentials.

Rooms

The lodge features 15 clean, airy rooms, each with air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom. They are simply decorated with local fabrics and wicker furniture.

Each room contains:

  • Air Conditioning and fan
  • International Direct Dial (IDD) Phone Service
  • Coffee table
  • Comfortable chairs
  • Ensuites with toilet and a hot water shower
  • Bottled drinking water

Food

The restaurant and bar are on a rise, offering a wonderful view of Bali. Breakfast is included in the tariff, while the lunch and evening meals are extra, but inexpensive. The food is organic, wholesome and plentiful tropical cuisine - all the ingredients are fresh and bought locally, and the menu is a mix of Balinese and international dishes with fresh fish being a specialty. Tea and coffee is available all day.

Features & Facilities

  • The lodge has a swimming pool, library, TV lounge, business centre, and seminar rooms with all facilities.
  • The gardens are truly lovely, with varied plant life and butterflies flitting about - there's also a giant chess set.
  • Udayana is home to Indonesia's sole cricket club. Guests with a sporting inclination can take advantage of the lodge's cricket gear and the local oval - you're also welcome to join in Sunday games.
  • Information, books and binoculars for bird and butterfly watching are available at the lodge.
  • The lodge offers affordable vehicle hire with modern vehicles and experienced drivers.
  • Free daily laundry is included in the tariff.

Local Info & Activities

The lodge is close to all of Southern Bali's attractions and drivers and cars can be hired, along with taxis, for reasonable rates. Just ten minutes' drive from the airport, it is quiet and peaceful, yet only 15 minutes drive from shopping in Nusa Dua or Kuta.

Jimbaran beach and its many fish restaurants are a short drive away.

Uluwatu and other famous surf spots are nearby.

At the right time of year, there are over 60 species of butterflies around the hotel (usually January, March and July).

Short bird watching walks at the Nusa Dua settling ponds show off many herons & egrets as well as other species.

Sustainability

The hotel is owned by Ecolodges Indonesia, which is supported by eco-investors through the Inira Def Foundation.

The lodge has developed environmentally friendly buildings with the use of solar power for hot water, pumps and some lighting, an extensive rainwater storage system, and the use of a biological sewage treatment plant where all wastewater is returned to the gardens through irrigation. One of the results is the lodge's beautiful gardens, which boast 22 types of bougainvillea.

Working with the local Udayana University, the lodge has established a 35-hectare bird sanctuary where an attempt is made to protect all birds, butterflies, wildlife and plants. There is a large and diverse number of birds recorded in the grounds of The Lodge.

The lodge sponsors scholarships for MSc students in Environmental Studies at the University.

The hotel staff is made up of local people and over 90% of the hotel's profits are returned to the local community.

Environmental training programs have been developed with the hotel's stakeholders, including staff (through on the job training), guests (through room files), the local government and community (by outreach) and the local Udayana University.

Revenues from all three eco lodges in this group are ploughed into setting up new ecolodges in other parts of Indonesia. At the moment work is beginning in South Sumatra to develop an Elephant Eco Lodge on the edge of Kambas National Park.

The Ecolodge is Green Globe certified.
